Sámi reindeer herder and yoiker Niiles-Jouni was born in 1947 in a smoke sauna in Lemmenjoki, Inari. Through his father Uula and grandfather Kaapin Jouni, the family descends from the famous Aikio reindeer herding family of Inari and Utsjoki. Niiles-Jouni's mother Inga, on the other hand, was the granddaughter of the famous Salkko Niila, originally of Norwegian Sámi descent.
The family moved from Lemmenjoki to Ivalon-Matti by the Ivalojoki river in the early 1950s, where Niiles-Jouni still has his reindeer farm today. From Ivalon-Matti, Niiles-Jouni has embarked on performing gigs around the world when reindeer work permits.
