Sámi reindeer herder and yoiker Niiles-Jouni was born in 1947 in a smoke sauna in Lemmenjoki, Inari. Through his father Uula and grandfather Kaapi Jouni, the family traces its lineage to the renowned Aikio reindeer herding family of Inari and Utsjoki. Niiles-Jouni's mother Inga, on the other hand, was the granddaughter of the famous Salkko Niila, originally of Norwegian Sámi descent.
The family moved from Lemmenjoki to Ivalojoki, to Ivalo-Matti, in the early 1950s, where Niiles-Jouni still has his reindeer farm. From Ivalo-Matti, Niiles-Jouni has embarked on performance tours around the world when reindeer herding duties permit.
