Sámi reindeer herder and yoiker Niiles-Jouni was born in 1947 in a smoke sauna in Lemmenjoki, Inari. Through his father Uula and grandfather Kaapin Jouni, the family traces its lineage to the renowned Aikio reindeer herding family of Inari and Utsjoki. Niiles-Jouni's mother, Inga, was the granddaughter of the famous Salkko Niila, originally of Norwegian Sámi descent.
In the early 1950s, the family moved from Lemmenjoki to Ivalon-Matti by the Ivalojoki river, where Niiles-Jouni still has his reindeer farm today. From Ivalon-Matti, Niiles-Jouni has traveled to performance gigs around the world when reindeer herding duties allowed.
